Where State & Grand Parking Lot - 2898 State St.
Beginning Sept. 15, the parking lot at the corner of State Street and Grand Avenue will become Carlsbad’s destination next, having been transformed into a temporary community square called the Village Pop-Up Plaza. The Plaza will be the site for a week-long social project designed to prove the need for more public space in the heart of the Village as part of the Village & Barrio Master Plan Charrette. To showcase the Plaza’s potential for community gatherings, it will be the location for hosted events held throughout the week.
Monday, Sept. 15, starting at 8:30 a.m., the plaza will host a free Carlsbad Village Pop Up Yoga Class led by Carlsbad Village Yoga and Fitness instructors.
Tuesday, Sept. 16, starting at 10 a.m., the Carlsbad Library will host Storytime, with storytelling and songs followed by arts and crafts. In the afternoon, several artists from the New Village Arts Foundry will be painting in the plaza. At 4:45 p.m., Carlsbad Village Yoga & Fitness will host a yoga class for the Boys and Girls Club.
Wednesday, Sept. 17, starting at 3 p.m., the plaza will host the State Street Farmers’ Market Craft Fair, where local artisans show off their best creations.
On Thursday, Sept. 18, at 8 p.m., Flicks at the Fountain will feature a special showing of “Big,” starring Tom Hanks.
On Friday, Sept. 19, several food trucks will descend upon the plaza at 6:00 p.m., and from 7-9 p.m., local musicians Mango Melody will play during Friday Night Live.
On Saturday, Sept. 20, musicians with the Carlsbad Music Festival, a three-day showcase of musical excitement, will move into the space.
When programming is not planned, visitors are encouraged to sit with cups of coffee and work on laptops in the Village Pop-Up Plaza during the day, or relax and enjoy the ocean breeze with friends in the evening. Guests to the space can also share their experience on social media using the hashtag #VillagePopUp.
