Walk + Bike Carlsbad

Blog Post - September 18, 2015

Category: What's New

Mark your calendars to join Walk + Bike Carlsbad on Thursday, Sept. 24 for a walk around the Village with your neighbors and friends. We will meet at Frazee Beach (corner of Pine Avenue and Carlsbad Boulevard) at 5:30 p.m. to enjoy a leisurely walk on the first evening of fall. We will continue these evening walks the second and fourth Thursdays of every month.

Coming car free is always best, so consider walking, bicycling, using transit, carpooling or any combination to get there. Learn more.

We have all the ingredients of a walkable community, which is why we were selected as a model in the region with the Walk + Bike Carlsbad campaign. But that's not all. The city has also taken steps to make the community more bike-friendly, including:

Adding bike racks in the Village, Barrio and beach areas, so it's easier to park your bike; creating new, wider bike lanes to create a buffer between bicyclists and cars; including more signs in the Village to show bicyclists and walkers the distance to popular destinations.

Walk + Bike Carlsbad will continue to seek out opportunities to encourage and promote walking and biking for short trips around town, and we welcome your feedback.

Carlsbad businesses are showing their support for Walk + Bike Carlsbad and we want to return the favor with our business spotlight feature. This week, we are shining the light on Wesco Pet Supplies.  Wesco is the meeting place for Walk + Bike Carlsbad's weekly dog walks, every Friday at 4 p.m. Wesco even hosts Yappy Hour, with refreshments, treats and raffle prizes, every third Friday of the month after the dog walks.  If you get a chance, please stop by this generous local business today. Your pet will thank you!

There are several benefits to becoming a Walk + Bike Carlsbad friendly business. To name just a few:

Studies show bicyclists make more trips to businesses and spend more money in the long run than car-based shoppers; walking and biking reduces traffic congestion and creates a more attractive business district; employees who bike or walk to work are supporting a healthy lifestyle. Healthy employees mean fewer sick days, better morale and more enthusiasm for their work.

If your business is interested in joining the movement, we have the tools to help you get started. Contact our Business Outreach Campaign Ambassador Joel Flood of the San Diego Bicycle Coalition at 858-487-6063.

Walk + Bike is a partnership led by the City of Carlsbad, Circulate San Diego and the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition to promote walking and biking around Carlsbad, with a special focus on the downtown Village and surrounding areas. The 12-month campaign is funded by a grant from the San Diego Association of Governments and includes events, outreach to schools, business promotions and other activities to get more people walking and biking instead of driving on short trips around town.
