This spring, New Village Arts brings a powerful, intimate story to the stage with The Mountaintop, running through June 22nd. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Katori Hall, this gripping two-person drama offers a bold reimagining of the final night of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, with a twist of magical realism.

Set on April 3rd, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, an exhausted Dr. King returns to his room after delivering one of his most memorable speeches. When a mysterious young hotel worker arrives with room service, a simple exchange transforms into a deep, emotional conversation about justice, legacy, and the human spirit.

Blending humor, heart, and historical insight, The Mountaintop invites audiences to see an American icon not as a distant figure, but as a man, full of hopes, doubts, and dreams. Directed by Durwood Murray in his NVA directorial debut, this production promises a uniquely powerful experience on the Ray Charles Stage at the Dea Hurston New Village Arts Center.
