As we head into the busy summer season, it’s a great time for all of us to refresh our knowledge of Carlsbad’s new e-bike safety rules and help keep our streets, trails, parks, and neighborhoods safe and welcoming for everyone.

The City of Carlsbad’s 60-day warning period for the new e-bike regulations ended on Memorial Day, May 25. While the Carlsbad Police Department will continue to emphasize education, riders who violate the new laws may now be subject to citations.

The updated rules are designed to promote safe and responsible riding as e-bikes continue to grow in popularity throughout the community. Key regulations include:

  • E-bike riders must be at least 12 years old.
  • Riders under 18 years old on any bicycle or e-bike, and riders of all ages on a Class 3 e-bike, must wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet.
  • E-bike operation is prohibited within Poinsettia Community Park and Pine Avenue Community Park. Riders should park their e-bikes when visiting these parks.
  • E-motorcycles, which are not street legal, may be impounded by the Police Department.
  • Minors who create an immediate or substantial public safety risk while riding may have their e-bike impounded and be required to complete an in-person safety course before it can be released to a parent or guardian.
  • Parents and guardians can be held responsible if they knowingly allow their children to violate the rules.

Whether you’re riding to the beach, heading to school or work, or exploring Carlsbad Village, these guidelines help ensure everyone can enjoy our community safely. Consider sharing this information with family members, neighbors, and young riders so we can all do our part to create a safer and more enjoyable experience on our roads and pathways this summer.
