The Carlsbad Village Association Achieves Green Business Certification

Remember the early days of switching from plastic grocery bags to reusable ones? It took time, and more than a few trips back to the car, but eventually it became second nature.

In much the same way, the Carlsbad Village Association (CVA) has steadily built its own sustainability practices over the years. What started as small, thoughtful changes has grown into a broader, more intentional commitment across events and daily operations.

CVA first took meaningful steps in 2018, introducing reusable cups and compostable serveware at Taste of Carlsbad Village. Since then, those efforts have continued to evolve. Most recently, in partnership with the City of Carlsbad, the State Street Farmers Market has transitioned to a single-use plastic free model. Today, visitors will find reusable, paper, or compostable bags in use, along with compostable serveware from all hot food vendors.

These changes have required commitment from vendors and the community alike, but the impact is clear, not only in reduced waste, but in a shared sense of responsibility for keeping the Village clean and welcoming.

This month marks an important milestone. CVA has been recognized with Tier 2 certification through the City of Carlsbad Green Business Program and is now a member of the California Green Business Network. Along the way, the organization has made operational updates such as switching to energy efficient lighting and eliminating single use coffee pods.

Individually, these steps may seem small. Together, they reflect a meaningful shift, one rooted in awareness, consistency, and a willingness to adapt. Sustainability does not happen all at once. It is built over time, through everyday decisions. And in Carlsbad Village, that progress continues, one step at a time.
