Your Ideas Needed: Help Design Carlsbad’s First Underpass Art at Chestnut & I-5
Blog Post - June 10, 2025
Category: What's New
The City of Carlsbad is launching its first permanent public art installation at a freeway underpass, and the community is invited to help shape it. The project will be located at the Chestnut Avenue underpass beneath I-5, a key gateway into the historic Barrio neighborhood and an important connector between the east and west sides of the city.
Join us Thursday morning from 9am to 11am at the historic Barrio Museum (across from Lola's Deli) to meet the artist team chosen for this noteworthy public art project.

This project is part of a broader set of improvements to the Chestnut underpass, including new bike lanes and wider sidewalks, being built by Caltrans and SANDAG through the Build NCC program.

Meet the Artist: Greenmeme
Following a public selection process, the city’s Cultural Arts Division has chosen the artist team Greenmeme to lead the project. Known for their community-based approach, Greenmeme will design the artwork using input from Carlsbad residents.
