New Village Arts Brings Broadway Hit [title of show] to Carlsbad Village

Blog Post - August 3, 2025

Category: What's New

New Village Arts is kicking off its 24th season with something completely original, completely charming, and completely unexpected. [title of show], the Tony-nominated Broadway musical about writing a musical, begins previews this Friday, August 8, with opening night set for Saturday, August 16. Performances will run through September 21 on the Ray Charles Stage at the Conrad Prebys Theatre in Carlsbad Village.

Written by Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell, [title of show] is a funny, fast-paced, and heartfelt look at two friends trying to write an original musical in just three weeks. With the help of two actor friends, they submit their show to a theatre festival — and the musical they’re writing becomes the very show the audience is watching. It’s a smart, self-referential, and deeply human story about the highs and lows of the creative process.

This production is directed by Desireé Clarke Miller, with music direction by Erin Vanderhyde and movement by Kevin “Blax” Burroughs. The four-person cast brings energy, humor, and sincerity to a show that celebrates collaboration, self-expression, and saying “yes” to bold ideas.

Audiences can expect an intimate and refreshing theatre experience that’s both laugh-out-loud funny and surprisingly moving. Called “sly, sassy, inspired” by Entertainment Weekly and “a good dose of fun” by AM New York, [title of show] is a love letter to making art and believing in your own voice — even when self-doubt creeps in.

Whether you’re a longtime musical theatre fan or simply looking for something different to enjoy in Carlsbad Village, this show is not to be missed.

Please note: the show contains strong language and is recommended for ages 16 and up.

Previews begin Friday, August 8.

Opening night: Saturday, August 16.

Runs through September 21.
