Carlsbad Village theatergoers, get ready for a bold new production! New Village Arts (NVA) kicks off 2026 with THE APIARY, written by Kate Douglas and directed by Kristianne Kurner. Set twenty-two years in the future, the play follows a team working in a synthetic honeybee laboratory, tasked with protecting the last surviving colonies on Earth. But when a shocking discovery inside the hive threatens everything, loyalties, missions, and the future itself hang in the balance.

Blending science fiction, dark humor, and human drama, THE APIARY asks: how far would you go to save what you love, and what would you be willing to sacrifice?

Performances run January 23 – February 22, 2026, at the Ray Charles Stage in the Dea Hurston New Village Arts Center. Previews are January 23–30, with Opening Night on Saturday, January 31, featuring a champagne reception and Handel’s Ice Cream. Industry Night is February 9.

The production brings the futuristic world to life through inventive scenic, lighting, sound, costume, and projection design, including a fully realized synthetic apiary onstage. The cast combines experienced NVA performers with exciting new talent, creating a tense, immersive, and unforgettable theatrical experience.

THE APIARY is a thought-provoking, visually striking play that explores the ethics of preservation, the cost of survival, and the lengths we’ll go to protect what we cherish. Don’t miss this imaginative new work in the heart of Carlsbad Village.
