Live jazz returns to St. Michael’s by-the-Sea as the Jazz Evensong Quintet performs instrumental adaptations of Duke Ellington’s Concert of Sacred Music on Sunday, February 1, 2026, from 4:00 to 5:30pm at 2775 Carlsbad Boulevard. The concert is free and open to the public.

Duke Ellington remains one of the most influential figures in American music, known for his sophisticated compositions, rich melodies, and lasting impact on jazz. This program brings Ellington’s music into a church setting while keeping the sound and spirit unmistakably jazz, expressive, inviting, and accessible to all.

The performance is part of Jazz Evensong at St. Michael’s by-the-Sea, a weekly series that began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to offer connection and comfort through music. What started as a response to a difficult time has grown into a beloved community tradition, welcoming listeners for an hour of exceptional jazz and quiet reflection.

Jazz Evensong offers a relaxed atmosphere where music takes center stage, creating space to pause, listen, and enjoy a Sunday afternoon in a meaningful way. No prior familiarity with jazz or church services is needed, all are welcome.

Following the February 1 performance, Jazz Evensong continues throughout the month, held every Sunday from 4:00 to 5:00pm at St. Michael’s by-the-Sea. All gatherings are offered free of charge.

Join the community for an inspiring return of live jazz and an opportunity to experience the timeless music of Duke Ellington in one of Carlsbad’s most beautiful settings.
