Carlsbad Village continues to be shaped by passionate entrepreneurs who bring their stories, traditions, and craft to our coastal community. The Carlsbad Village Association is proud to welcome one of our newest partner members, Café Dawny, a family-run café founded by Rich Barton that blends New Zealand heritage with the spirit of Southern California.

Located at 2805 Roosevelt Street, Café Dawny is built on a simple idea: thoughtful food, made with care, and shared in a welcoming space. For Barton, the café represents both family tradition and a love for community gathering places.

The name itself carries deep meaning. Café Dawny is named after Barton’s grandmother. “Dawny” represents warmth, resilience, hospitality, and the tradition of bringing people together around good food. The name also evokes the feeling of dawn, early mornings, fresh starts, and the relaxed rhythm of coastal life.
At the heart of Café Dawny’s menu are authentic New Zealand-style pies and sausage rolls, a beloved staple throughout New Zealand. Unlike Australian-style pies, which are often thinner and more gravy-heavy, New Zealand pies are known for their hearty fillings and deeply developed flavor.

At Café Dawny, each pie is handcrafted in-house using premium meats and slow-cooked fillings. The pies are wrapped in short crust pastry and topped with flaky puff pastry, creating the classic layered texture that defines a traditional New Zealand pie. Everything is made without preservatives or unnecessary additives, allowing the quality of the ingredients and the care behind the process to shine.
In New Zealand, pies are part of everyday culture. They are enjoyed after a surf, after rugby, after a long workday, or even late at night with friends. Café Dawny brings that same tradition to Carlsbad Village, offering food that is comforting, authentic, and rooted in craft.

Alongside its savory menu, the café also serves house-made quiches and features Ripple Specialty Coffee, a brand connected to Barton’s New Zealand roots. Small-batch roasted in California and inspired by New Zealand’s renowned café culture, Ripple connects two coastlines through coffee and ocean culture.
The brand also carries a meaningful mission. A portion of every bag sold supports The Jonah Project, an organization that helps rescue pilot whales stranded along Farewell Spit at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. The same Pacific waters that connect New Zealand and California inspired the idea that every cup can create a ripple of positive impact.
As one of the newest partner members of the Carlsbad Village Association, Café Dawny adds another unique layer to the Village’s vibrant and locally driven dining scene. We invite the community to stop by 2805 Roosevelt Street, meet Rich and the team, and experience a taste of New Zealand right here in the heart of Carlsbad Village.
